The university architect wants to create a “more campus-like layout.” He might as well sell the southern end of campus to the University of Phoenix.

According to an article called “Rate of building on campus slows down” that appeared in the Feb. 16 Clarion, DU does want to “improve the general ‘feel’ of the south side of campus.” So says Mark Rodgers, university architect, at least.
South Iliffers, don’t get too excited. This doesn’t really mean anything, unless you are an engineer. Even if you are an engineer, I’m not sure how much it means, and maybe you can tell me. I, after all, am a journalism major and supposedly don’t use my brain as much as you do.
Rodgers is quoted as saying, “The School of Engineering is the project that allows us to make south of Iliff Avenue feel much more like the part of the university campus, as opposed to bits of pieces of campus and bits of pieces apartments.”
Yeah, right. How is rebuilding just one of the southern buildings going to make the whole south end of campus actually feel like campus? Down in the Mass Communications building I sure won’t be feeling more campus-y.
As if he hadn’t rubbed enough salt in the wound, Rodgers also said, “You want a vibrant part of campus, but there’s this piece on the far side,” and he didn’t stop there. “I know it’s on the chancellor’s mind.”
Oh really? Well that’d be a relief if I could believe it. Maybe I’ll schedule another imaginary meeting with Chancellor Coombe to find out.
While I’m at it, I might as well ask Santa Claus for a new Mass Comm school. Maybe the Diet Dr. Pepper delivery guy can drop it off in the middle of Driscoll Green. Then, at least, it would be inside “the ideal zone for the undergraduate circle of campus,” magically curing the building of it’s terrible case of southofolinhallitus.
A girl can dream, right?
South Iliffers, what do you think? Is it time we were treated like the DU students we are?
