Letter from the Editor: Regarding Stuart Cobb's "Seven women you meet at DU"

Editor-in-chief

To the DU Community,

Please accept my most sincere apologies in running Stuart Cobb’s most recent editorial, “Fancy That: The seven women you meet at DU.”

We understand the mistake of running it. We understand the editorial was perceived as misogynistic, and that was not our intent. We published it without malice. I do not defend misogyny, nor do I share the same feelings. I understand the severity of our choices and there will be a formal apology in next week’s Clarion as well as comments and letters sent to the editor.

Stuart’s most recent apology does not reflect the opinion of the Clarion, and we apologize for all the frustration and heartache.

I am a student at DU and have greatly learned from this experience. I understand the severity of the decision, and strict decisions have been made about further guidelines for editorial submission.

Again, please accept my sincere apologies.

There was a ring of truth to the article. We all know the types of people written about in the article. They are on all campuses and have their male counterparts. Way too sensitive

Thanks for pointing out where the article still is, since the Clarion apparently has a "1984" editorial policy in which articles do not now and never did exist.

"To AJ's comment- DU has an excellent reputation and the fact that you haven't heard of it means you were not good enough to get in. "

Lol, yea better than the UCs and Stanford? Very funny.

I would like to know why you printed this article in the first place.

It hurt our school in a way that cannot be taken back. This article will drive away qualified women. I hope Mr. Cobb has been fired from the Clarion staff. He's already made DU look bad enough.

I have a feeling this apology came from the previous comments of you not being sincere enough, and I am still incredibly disappointed with the decision made to run this article. I guess all you can do is apologize, but think about all of the people who want the resignation of the editors before printing the next issue.

To AJ's comment- DU has an excellent reputation and the fact that you haven't heard of it means you were not good enough to get in.

Arianna,

You = Smart. Everyone else involved = not so much. It's true that Mr. Cobb never claimed his "apology" was such, but I think you know that too. Thanks so much and all the best. Rest assured if you're out there trying to get a job in the future and I'm in some position to help, I will.

P.S.--Call out--care to confirm or deny Cobb's assertion that he originally submitted a two-part article on the 7 men and 7 women you'd meet at DU? I think he was just making that up...

I don't attend DU nor have i ever heard of it, but after reading that article i was only left with the thought "no wonder i haven't heard of this college", and as far as i'm concerned as long as you have someone like cobbs on your staff your paper will never be respected as well as being a blemish on your university's reputation.

Lighten up. There are bigger things.

Arianna, I thought I should point out since you referenced "Stuart's most recent apology..." that Stuart didn't ever apologize or say he was sorry anywhere in that article or anywhere else for that matter. He just further insulted DU and said we were stupid.

As far as your apology, this was all we, the DU community wanted to hear from both Cobb and the editors. That you truly understood why this was so wrong to write and publish, that this article was not satire but just pure and simple hate rhetoric. It takes a strong person to come forward and stand up like you are doing right now. Your apology is the first one I have heard that has any sincerity. I am very proud of you!!

I wish I could say the same for Mr. Cobb. But it looks like he would rather resign than admit he was wrong. As a result, The Clarion is obviously much better off.

You might want to note that The Clarion already has guidelines in place for editorial submissions, so if you just follow those, I think you'll be okay. .

Best of luck to you!
