Men’s hoops fall on road, ESPN contest looms

Despite dominant home performance, road loss drops DU in SBC West

The DU men's basketball team rebounded last Thursday with a 66-52 win over Arkansas State, following a tough overtime loss on Jan. 21 to North Texas. However, the team couldn't keep the momentum going over the weekend when they hit the road to take on Arkansas-Little Rock in a pivotal Sun Belt Conference matchup.

Brittain returns; hockey sweeps UAA

After traveling to Anchorage, Alaska, over the weekend, the No. 13 Denver hockey team swept the Seawolves, winning 4-2 Friday and 6-3 Saturday. Sophomore goalie Sam Brittain returned to the net Saturday, playing in his first game of the season following knee surgery in June.

Pennington’s struggle helps him rise to top

Senior swimmer Tyler Pennington has overcome an unfortunate diagnosis to remain a contributing member of the Pioneer swim team this season, tallying several victories and earning Sun Belt Conference Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 10. Early last summer, Pennington was diagnosed with Parsonage-Turner Syndrome, a disease that weakens the muscles of the shoulders, arms and back.

True freshman Royce O’Neale has gone from vital bench player to collegiate starter

Freshman forward Royce O'Neale is making the sometimes-difficult transition from high school to collegiate athletics look quite simple with his stellar performance so far this season for the Pioneer men's basketball team. O'Neale, a native of Killeen, Texas, has been improving throughout his freshman season, transforming from newcomer to the team's sixth man and its top bench player.

Women’s hoops continue win streak

Pioneers clinch SBC West lead, prepare to battle SBC East leader Middle Tennessee this weekend

The DU women's basketball team defeated both Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock last week to claim first place in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference, increasing their winning streak to five games. On Wednesday, the Pioneers (13-8, 5-2 SBC) faced Arkansas State in Magness Arena and won 73-61.

Gymnastics dominates home opener

The Denver gymnastics squad defeated both the Air Force Academy and Centenary College for their first two victories of the season at their at-home opener on Saturday. With a season-high meet total of 195.4, the Pioneer squad brought its season average to 194.

Grant named Colorado Sportswoman of the Year Pioneer sophomore Sterling Grant was named the 2011 Colorado Sportswoman of the Year for alpine skiing, Sportswomen of Colorado announced last Thursday. "What Sterling did last year was amazing," said head alpine coach Andy LeRoy.

Mixed results for DU tennis

Pioneer tennis competed this weekend to mixed results, with the women winning Friday and Saturday at the Colorado Athletic Club-Monaco in Denver and the men unable to overcome tough competitors in Cambridge, Mass.   The Pioneer women were able to earn their third straight 6-1 victory after beating the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP) on Friday, advancing to 3-0 on the 2012 season.
