Matrix in person

Bridges to the Future presents Cornel West, who is an activist, author, professor and spokesperson for The Matrix. A free lecture will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in Gates Concert Hall.

West's writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the American traditions of the Baptist Church, transcendentalism, socialism and pragmatism. His best-selling book, Race Matters, changed the course of America's dialogue on race, justice and democracy. He was an influential force in developing the storyline for the popular Matrix trilogy.

Admission is free, but tickets are required and seating is limited. To reserve tickets, call x2357.

Communication professor speaks

The Human Communication Studies Department and the Marsico Initiative are sponsoring Sandra Petronio, who will present a lecture titled, "The Parallel Worlds of Private Disclosure," tonight in Sturm Hall, room 286, at 5 p.m.

In her presentation, she will explain the principles of the communication privacy management theory, which addresses the ways that individuals, groups, families, organizations and communities use communication to handle contradictory needs for privacy and disclosure.

Petronio is a communication studies professor at Indiana University at Purdue University Indianapolis

Fit a lot of books into a brown bag

The book Stack's Bargain Book Bash will be held May 13 - 16 in Mary Reed. The shelves hold 40,000 new and used books for both children and adults.

People holding a book stack buyers card are permitted to buy books and attend a wine and cheese table May 13 from 6-8 p.m. in the hallway of Mary Reed.

The general public is invited to attend May 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 2 p.m. May 16 for the big bagger, when you can pack as many books into a large bag provided by the volunteers for $5.
