Faculty - notice some extra growth on fellas' faces lately?

Or girls - do your cheeks sense that your boyfriend's 5 o'clock shadow has grown in and is now a second-week scruff?

That's because the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity is spearheading an original event known as the Mustache Bash where male students are encouraged to come sporting their best attempt at some lip lint.

Senior John Caplin, a member of Lambda, who had the idea to hold Mustache Bash, said the event's primary role is to raise money for a local charity, the National Sports Center for the Disabled.

"The NSCD is just a great charity," said Caplin. "Over 7,000 disabled participants go through the program each year and we're extremely excited to be given the opportunity to help them out as much as we can."

For more than 30 years, this Denver-based charity has taken physically or developmentally disabled children and adults to various terrains including cliffs, trails, rivers and ski slopes.

According to the organization's Web site, this is done so that participants can "learn more about mountain sports - and themselves," as they follow the motto, "no mountain too high."

With help and donations from many campus organizations, ranging from other Greek houses to the AUSA Senate and the Ritchie Center, Caplin has generated buzz on campus about the fundraiser.

"We have already received a number of donations from many campus groups and clubs and have now extended out to the surrounding community for even more support," said Caplin.

Caplin explained, "We were originally hoping to raise $5,000 for the charity, but should now do that very easily. Our new goal is $10,000."

Caplin hopes the media bash become an annual occurrence.

"My hope is that I am able to set something up for the future," he said. "I realize that it's a gradual process, but I would love to come back 20 years from now and see that the event is still growing larger and larger each year."
