It was a tale of two halves for the Pioneer men's lacrosse team on Saturday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Playing in their final home game of the season, DU notched only one goal in the first half against in-state and Great Western Lacrosse League rival Air Force Academy, but then exploded in the second half, finding the back of the net 10 times to register a much needed, come-from-behind victory.
SALT LAKE CITY- The picturesque snow-covered mountains stood in the background. Bumble in his black-and-yellow-striped custume pranced around the half-filled stadium and the yellow train slowly, circled the outfield track. It was minor-league baseball at its finest on a sun-drenched Saturday afternoon.
When a team has a star player, it relies on her to come through when it needs it the most. This rang true for the Pioneers on Saturday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium as DU senior midfielder Kristie Leggio once again bailed her team out of a tight game. Leggio, who is among the top scorers in the country this season, registered eight points in a thrilling victory over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival the University of California, 12-10.
The DU club cycling team concluded its Spring regular season by finishing third in the Rocky Mountain Cycling Conference last weekend in Grand Junction, Colo. The Pioneers finished behind only Colorado College and Mesa State College. Leading the way for the DU team was the men's A time trial team, who won their respective conference championship, edging Colorado State University by eight seconds in the 11 mile race.
The Denver Pioneers varsity hockey team was just over .500 this season, despite a disappointing loss in the first round of the WCHA playoffs, for the second year in a row. What appeared to be a dismal ending to last season for seniors on the team is now starting to turn around.
SALT LAKE CITY- There were the smiles from a goal-setting 10th place finish and the tears from the four seniors whose careers sadly came to an end after leading their team to a historic and record-setting season last Thursday at the NCAA Championships. In the evening session on Thursday at the Hunstman Center on the campus of the University of Utah, the Pioneers finished in fifth place out of six teams with a score of 195.
It was a night that featured surprises, goal-setting, sadness, disappointment and, in the end, team unity. Thursday night at the Huntsman Center on the campus of the University of Utah, the Pioneer gymnasts concluded a season that placed them on the gymnastics map.
