Fake IDs popular, risky

Fake IDs may not necessarily be common at DU, but for those who have them or want them, they are they only way to experience the college nightlife. Some students say that fake IDs do not prohibit them from drinking, only going to off campus drinking locations. Bouncers and bartenders see fake IDs as a significant liability and are careful to watch for them. Common attributes of a fake ID that bouncers mentioned were the photograph, misspellings, missing holograms and errors on the backs of the ID. Bars can be shut down and minors can experience serious repercussions if they are caught, such as misdemeanor charges, fines or accusations of identity fraud for having another person's ID.

If you are a party animal and enjoy the nightlife, you probably have a fake ID. This is the result of an informal survey by the Clarion.

Yet, according to the Colorado State Judicial Branch, possessing a fake ID is a serious crime and subject to fines, felony and misdemeanor charges.

Some students have mixed feelings about the potential risk of using a fake ID. Others find that the benefits of a fake ID outweighing the consequences.

A junior female student said she does not have a fake ID because "it seems wrong and I'd be too scared of getting caught. Plus, my parents would kill me."

A senior male also stated that the legal ramifications of possessing a fake ID were much greater than being able to get into a bar.

Hmm. $120 for a quality fake ID sounds like a deal. In the 1970's we made California photo IDs and sold them for $75 to $125 (including a matching selective service draft card). (Continued…)
